VMWare Fusion

Who should use it?

Anybody really.

From college students to C level executives.

What is it?

Most tech savvy people using Macs have heard of VMWare Fusion so I won’t bore you with the details.

My experience with the product is limited to Windows 8.

Why did I decide to use it?

I chose this product because I didn’t want to dual boot my Mac and I didn’t want to purchase additional hardware just for Windows.  It wasn’t just about the cost of additional hardware (although $52.49 for VMWare Fusion 7 is quite attractive).  It’s also about the hassle, especially when it comes to travel and you’re to run 2 laptops through the security scanners.

At the end of the day, I simply wanted to access certain Windows applications at my leisure while running the Mac OS.

Aside from Windows specific applications, I can use the Windows instance to utilize the manual duplex print option on my printer.  Unfortunately Mac drivers don’t support it.  Also, I’m able to utilize the tools on Terminal Services via Internet Explorer.

If you really want to use Office applications and don’t want to spend the money, you can always install Open Office.

How long have I been using it?

I’ve been running VMWare Fusion for almost 3 years.  I have upgraded it a few times.  An upgrade is sometimes required when a new OS is applied.  Each version is very stable.

What does it require?

Be prepared to add RAM.  I would say you need at least 16 Gb, which is what I’m running.

Results:

I am thoroughly impressed.

It’s one of those applications that just works.  I can copy/paste as well as transfer files between Mac & Windows with ease.

Final Thoughts:

I will continue to use this product and purchase the upgrades as they come out, without hesitation.
